Copeland, a global provider of sustainable climate solutions, has opened a new engineering and technology centre in Pune, India. This is part of a Rs 500 crore investment plan aimed at leveraging India’s STEM talent and supporting the country’s goal of becoming a global innovation hub. The centre will enhance Copeland’s global innovation network, contributing to research and development efforts both locally and internationally.

The Pune facility spans over 15,000 square metres and houses over 320 engineers specialising in various disciplines, including engineering, research and development, and software and firmware development. This centre will facilitate faster innovation and product development within India. It will also allow the team to be more responsive to market needs and develop sustainable solutions.

“Copeland’s presence in India spans over three decades. Our current investment plan, including this investment in our new state-of-the-art Pune Engineering and Technology centre , as well as the in-progress expansion of our manufacturing operations in Atit, underscore our commitment to the India market,” said Copeland’s CEO Ross B. Shuster.

Developing sustainable technologies

The new centre complements the ongoing expansion of their manufacturing operations in Atit.

With over 15 per cent of Copeland’s global engineering team based in India, the local team plays a crucial role in developing sustainable technologies. The centre’s focus will be on energy-efficient, low-GWP, and natural refrigerant technologies for global use in HVAC and refrigeration.

“Innovation is in Copeland’s DNA, and our new Pune Technology and Engineering centre further enables our efforts to solving some of the world’s most complex climate challenges,” said Copeland’s chief technology officer Patrick Forsythe.

To address growing demand for sustainable cooling

Copeland’s commitment to India addresses the increasing demand for sustainable cooling in sectors like data centres and the broader HVAC market. Data centre growth is projected to exceed 8 per cent CAGR through 2026, with cooling systems consuming up to 50 per cent of their energy. Copeland is developing energy-efficient solutions specifically for this market.

The HVAC market in India, expected to reach $30 billion by 2030, presents significant opportunities. Growth drivers include urbanisation, green initiatives, and aftermarket services.

The Pune centre will also support India’s need for sustainable solutions in heating, cooling, cold chain, and industrial applications.
