Doosan Robotics announced on September 15 that it has opened the ‘Doosan Robotics Innovation Center’ to enhance its robotics research and development (R&D) capabilities. Located in Bundang-gu, Seongnam City, Gyeonggi Province, the center spans approximately 2,000 square meters, making it the largest robot research institute in South Korea.
The center employs about 80 researchers, accounting for 40% of the total staff, who will focus on developing intelligent robot solutions, humanoid technologies, hardware refinement, artificial intelligence (AI), and software capabilities. These efforts aim to accelerate innovation within the company.
The Innovation Center consolidates all essential R&D resources, including the development of core robot parts such as high-performance drive modules, controllers, and torque sensors, alongside AI-based motion research, payload handling, welding, new solution development, and quality testing. This setup enables real-time collaboration among researchers, fostering faster development of new technologies and products.
The facility’s spacious quality testing area performs various rigorous tests, such as repeatedly switching power on and off, verifying robot arm movements over a maximum outdoor reach of approximately 2 meters, and simulating extreme environments using temperature and humidity chambers to ensure product reliability and durability.
Additional specialized spaces equipped with local exhaust systems and ventilation facilitate tasks like sanding and welding, prioritizing worker safety and health. The center is also developing advanced humanoid robotics, including multi-arm control, collision avoidance technology, and autonomous task planning, with the goal of creating smarter, more versatile robots.
Furthermore, Doosan Robotics has recruited former Toss Securities CTO Oh Chang-hoon as Executive Director to lead AI and software development efforts. With extensive experience in platform architecture, Oh will focus on advancing intelligent robot solutions and next-generation AI capabilities.
Kim Min-pyo, CEO of Doosan Robotics, stated, “Since declaring AI innovation in April, we have been steadily advancing through hiring, organizational restructuring, strategic acquisitions, and now the opening of this center,” adding, “With accumulated industrial data and top-tier research talent, we will elevate our AI technology and lead the era of physical AI
