The investment in scientific and technological research and development by the companies listed in China sustained growth in the first half of this year, the 2024 semi-annual report of listed companies showed.
Data showed that in the first half of the year, the total research and development investment of listed companies came in at 750 billion yuan (about 105.57 billion U.S. dollars), an increase of 0.97 percent year on year, which has maintained growth for many consecutive years.
The overall research and development intensity of listed companies was 2.14 percent, an increase of 0.05 percentage points year on year. The research and development intensity of listed companies on the ChiNext, Science and Technology Innovation Board, and Beijing Stock Exchange was 5.02 percent, 11.26 percent, and 4.87 percent, respectively.
Strategic emerging industries, high-tech manufacturing, and industries such as computers, electronics, and mechanical equipment industries have shown high innovation vitality, with research and development intensity exceeding 5 percent.
“Technological capabilities are the key to a company’s competitiveness. Increasing research and development expenditures and investing more resources in research and development can drive progress in the company’s technological innovation, improve product quality, expand market share, and enhance competitiveness. We have seen that many industries are exploring how to incorporate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence into existing businesses. Improving production efficiency through technological innovation is also a major means of enterprise transformation and upgrading,” said Yang Chao, chief strategy analyst of China Galaxy Securities.
Russia said on Sunday its forces had seized the two settlements of Ptyche and Vyimka in the Donetsk region and were pushing deeper into Ukraine’s defense lines, while Ukraine said that nearly 100 battles had taken place in the frontline areas over the past 24 hours and the situation remains grim.

Meanwhile, the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces reported that as of Sunday afternoon, 91 fierce battles occurred in the frontline areas over the past 24 hours, and Ukrainian forces are taking all necessary measures to contain the Russian offensive.
Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces Oleksandr Syrskyi wrote on social media on Sunday that the situation is quite grim in the directions of Russia’s main offensive, and the Ukraine army will adjust its battlefield decisions according to the changes of the situation.
He pointed out that despite Russia’s superiority in the number of weapons and armed personnel, Ukraine forces’ perseverance has inflicted heavy losses on the Russian army.
In addition, Vyacheslav Gladkov, governor of southwestern Russia’s Belgorod Oblast, said that Russian air defense forces shot down a number of aerial targets over the region on Sunday, and preliminary statistics showed that nine people were injured in the Ukrainian air raids.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky posted on social media on Sunday that Russia launched missiles on the country’s second largest city Kharkiv on the same day, causing severe damage to infrastructure facilities and injuring 41 people so far.
