BEML Limited has entered into a tripartite research partnership with the Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, and the Foundation for Science, Innovation and Development (FSID), IISc’s innovation and incubation arm, to pursue advanced research across emerging engineering and technology domains.
The collaboration will focus on a broad spectrum of priority areas, including aerospace and defence technologies, rail and metro systems, mining and construction equipment, maritime platforms, next-generation mobility, green technologies, and advanced manufacturing. The initiative aims to translate cutting-edge research into practical, deployable technologies aligned with national and industrial needs.
The partnership has been formalised through a Tripartite Master Research Agreement (MRA), which lays out a structured framework for collaborative research, shared access to infrastructure, and coordinated execution. The agreement was signed at the IISc campus in the presence of Shantanu Roy, Chairman and Managing Director, BEML Limited; Professor Govindan Rangarajan, Director, IISc Bengaluru; and Professor B Gurumoorthy, Director, FSID. Senior leadership from BEML, including Anil Jerath, Director (Finance); Debi Prasad Satpathy, Director (Human Resources); and Dr Shailendra V Gade, Advisor, along with representatives from all three institutions, were also present.
Speaking on the collaboration, Shri Roy said the partnership marks an important step in BEML’s journey toward becoming a future-focused, innovation-driven engineering enterprise. He noted that the integration of academic research, advanced science, and industrial engineering capabilities will help accelerate technology development across defence, mobility, infrastructure, and sustainable manufacturing, while reinforcing BEML’s commitment to indigenisation and global competitiveness.
Professor Gurumoorthy, Director, FSID, said the collaboration strengthens the industry–academia–innovation ecosystem by combining BEML’s Central Research Facility, IISc’s scientific depth, and FSID’s innovation and execution capabilities. He added that such partnerships are vital for accelerating the transition from research to real-world deployment, particularly in strategic sectors such as defence, mobility, and advanced manufacturing.
The collaboration will be anchored through BEML’s newly established Central Research Facility (CRF), envisioned as a centre of excellence for advanced research, technology development, and proof-of-concept initiatives aligned with the company’s long-term roadmap. The framework enables joint knowledge creation and technology development by leveraging IISc’s academic leadership, FSID’s innovation ecosystem, and BEML’s expertise in engineering, manufacturing, and systems integration.
Under the agreement, the partners will undertake exploratory and applied research, simulation and modelling, prototype development, validation of critical technologies, and intellectual property creation. BEML has committed dedicated R&D investments to support and sustain the collaborative research programmes.
Aligned with BEML’s R&D policy, statutory requirements, and global best practices, the initiative aims to establish a robust and sustainable research ecosystem that advances technological capability, strengthens national self-reliance, and enhances long-term industrial competitiveness.
BEML Limited is a leading multi-technology Schedule ‘A’ company under the Ministry of Defence, serving key sectors such as Defence, Rail, Mining, and Construction. The company operates across three verticals—Defence & Aerospace, Mining & Construction, and Rail & Metro—and has state-of-the-art manufacturing facilities in Bengaluru, Kolar Gold Fields, Mysore, and Palakkad. With strong in-house R&D capabilities and a nationwide sales and service network, BEML brings over six decades of experience in engineering and manufacturing excellence.
The Foundation for Science, Innovation and Development (FSID) is the single-window interface for industry and external engagement with the Indian Institute of Science. Promoted by IISc as a Section 8 company under the Companies Act, 2013, FSID facilitates collaborations across research, incubation, product development, and consulting. It also manages industry-funded research through structured tripartite agreements, providing administrative, financial, and contract management support to ensure effective execution and impact.
Established in 1909 through the vision of Jamsetji Nusserwanji Tata, the Mysore royal family, and the Government of India, the Indian Institute of Science is India’s premier institution for advanced scientific and technological research and education. With a mandate to promote original investigation and advanced instruction, IISc was designated an Institution of Eminence by the Government of India in 2018 and consistently ranks among the top Indian institutions globally.
