NYK, MTI file patent for reduced iron transport technology

Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha Line (NYK) and tech solutions provider MTI have jointly filed a patent application for an advanced technology designed to improve the safety and quality of reduced iron transportation through bulk carriers.

This integrated system combines various technologies to facilitate safer marine transportation of reduced iron.

The technology deploys Internet of Things (IoT) sensors to collect and remotely monitor environmental data such as temperature, humidity and oxygen within the ship’s holds in real-time.

This reduces the risk of cargo damage and limits the need for crew members to enter the holds to check on cargo conditions, preventing accidents and human error incidents.

Machine learning is utilised to estimate the environment in the hold during voyages, considering factors such as the ship’s specifications, operational data, and initial cargo information. This predictive approach aids in planning and executing safer shipping operations, the firms said.

The onboard display system provides critical information to assist in making decisions related to hold safety. It will show environmental data and suggest specific countermeasures, such as ventilation and inert gas injection, to maintain the safety of both cargo and crew.

The technology enables the support for safety and quality control to extend beyond the ship to land-based operations. Satellite communications enable real-time monitoring of environmental data from office locations.

The development of this technology is a response to the steel industry’s push towards carbon neutrality, with reduced iron playing a crucial role in eliminating the need for coke in the manufacturing process.

Last year, NYK Line agreed to fully acquire Mitsubishi Ore Transport by purchasing all shares from Mitsubishi, Tokio Marine & Nichido Fire, and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries.
